Summary of Book: Marcus “Diesel” O’Shaughnessy is a brash, oversized CrossFit enthusiast while Jamie Prince is a private school teacher with an extremely low tolerance for bullshit. They have three things in common; they’re both lifeguards for the summer, cannot stay away from each other, and both of them have secrets they’re determined to keep. But what happens in the shadows of the Long Beach boardwalk can only remain hidden for so long, before the July sunshine reveals the hot, unrelenting connection they never expected, forcing Marcus and Jamie to decide if they’re simply caught up in a temporary heat stroke or if they’ve found something worth rescuing…
While this is the second book in the Beach Kingdom series, you do not have to read the first in order to love the second. I’ve read all three and Heat Stroke is by far my favorite in the series. This was my first ever m/m romance and after finishing this, I’m on the hunt for more books like this. I simply cannot express how much I loved this book. I not only read this in one three hour sitting, but I’ve reread it three times since finishing it and I’m most likely going to reread it for a fourth time by the end of the year.
“”He continued to be drawn to Jaime like a bee to the most beautiful flower in the garden, taking advantage of the nectar, the nourishment he got from being close to Jaime. He was like an addict who couldn’t resist the pull of one more hit. One more hit…”
There is something magical in the way that Tessa Bailey writes her stories. She creates these uniquely dynamic characters that feel like real people, not like fictional characters. I felt as if I could go to the Long Beach boardwalk, run into Jamie and Marcus and have an hour long conversation with them. That’s how magical Tessa Bailey writes.
I can’t even express how much I loved this book. So much so that it should be a movie. A movie that I would watch a million times over and over again. So much so that I’m going to refer to this book whenever I’m in a reading slump because I fell in love with each and every chapter.
“Give me the first, last and only chance you ever give another person to be your everything.”
Jamie Prince is the second of three brothers and he’s by far the most complex. He’s gay, a private school teacher, articulate, and dresses snazzier than anyone I have ever met. His love for cardigans and not dealing with bullshit is one of my favorite things about him. He knows what he wants and doesn’t settle for anything less than. Which is where Marcus comes in. He’s buff, he’s loud, he rude, he acts stupid (he’s really not) and he’s very much straight… Right?
“Because it was Marcus and they were exploring something honest and when they were alone, the world was narrowed down to just the two of them. And the two of them together was everything right.”
While Jamie is proud of his sexual orientation and sure of it, Marcus is the opposite. He believes that he’s straight but when he sees Jamie… He knows that something deep inside of himself has feelings for Jamie. Looks at Jamie as more than a friend, as more than a straight man would look at another man. A fateful night, a steamy make-out session, and Marcus’s world implodes. Jamie’s done the secret relationship thing before and he refuses to do it again. But Marcus is so… sweet, and caring, and adorable…it’s impossible for Jamie to resist being with him. They soon enter a secret relationship, and when things take a horrible turn for the worse, Marcus needs to decide if he’s going to continue to live a lie and lose the love of his life, or tell the world the truth, loud and proud, and have Jamie right there with him.
“”I was going to say you can keep my heart in a cage. But the truth is, I think it was in a cage before. Before I let myself love you,” Jaime said, his throat working. “You turned the key and let it out. Now it feels… like it has so much more room to beat. Like it could keep growing forever because you’re around to fill it up…”
If you’re like me and you’ve never read any male/ male romances before, I would highly suggest starting with this one. Not only does Tessa Bailey know how to write versatile characters, heart-wrenching scenes, and beautiful romances, but she knows how to write some of the best steamy scenes I’ve ever read in my life. I read this in one sitting and I have a feeling, if you gave it a chance, you would too.
